Effects of Homelessness

On Newstalk FM Dr Austin O’Carroll, HSE Clinical Lead for the COVID Homeless Response in Dublin praised the support given by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) to organisations like Sophia over the past year and a half.

This support and the work of the HSE and the DRHE has been greatly appreciated by our services. It has also had a positive impact on the work we do and the people who are supported by our staff.

Dr O'Carroll also laid bare the terrible physical effects that homelessness has on people. An interim report published by Dr Carrol found that people who have been homeless for more than 18 months have a mortality rate 8 times that of those who have been homeless for less than 6 months.

Providing permanent homes with wrap around supports is key to ensuring that people who have experienced homelessness get the care and support they need to recover from the trauma of being homeless.
