Sophia Housing was delighted to host an event on 2nd July 2024 with the Presentation Sisters to mark the 200th Year Anniversary of the Presentation Sisters founding their Community in Portlaoise on the 2nd of July 1824. Celebrating a legacy of faith and service that has spanned two centuries, this momentous occasion was marked by a tour of the exact location where the Community was founded, which is where Sophia Housing have commenced the construction of fifty-two homes.
On the 2nd of July 1824, the Presentation Sisters founded their community in Portlaoise, and this has been a beacon of faith, education, and social service in Portlaoise for two centuries spreading its core values of compassion, charity, and community. Through their tireless efforts, the Presentation Sisters in Portlaoise have significantly contributed to the social and spiritual fabric of Portlaoise.
"We are deeply honoured to celebrate this significant milestone in the Order's history", stated Michael McCarthy, Chairperson, Sophia Housing. "This bicentennial event is not just a reflection on past achievements, but a reaffirmation of the dedication by Sophia Housing and the Sisters in Portlaoise to continue a commitment of social justice and community service for many more years to come."
Tony O’Riordan the C.E.O of Sophia noted that "It is inspirational that after 200 Years of service the Presentation Sisters have discerned that they want to continue to serve the local community and meet one of the current pressing needs of society which is the need for housing, and by working with Sophia, the site where their community was founded on the 2nd of July 1824 will now be the location of much needed homes. Mr O Riordan outlined that "Sophia has begun construction of 52 new homes on the former site of the Presentation Sisters and with the support of Laois County Council and the Department of Housing these homes will be completed by the end of 2025."
